Hot Cup Memory and Alive Cup are not mutually exclusive. A cup can be an Alive Cup — shifting meaningfully across all temperature stages — while its most memorable state is the hot phase. The distinction is between what changes (Alive Cup) and what is remembered (Hot Cup Memory).
A cup can also be Hot Cup Memory without being fully Alive Cup, if the warm and cool phases are similar to each other but both quieter than the hot phase.

“Hot Cup Memory means the coffee goes flat.” The cool phase is not flat — it is quieter. The distinction matters. A flat cup has lost structure. A Hot Cup Memory cup has completed its most active communication and is now resting.
“You should drink it quickly.” This is a preference, not a rule. Some observers find the cool phase of a Hot Cup Memory coffee more accessible precisely because it is less demanding.
